Acacia Senegal vs Acacia Seyal: A Buyer’s Comparison

Compare Hashab and Talha gum by botanical source, trade terminology, documentation and application-led procurement decisions.

Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal are both recognised sources of commercial gum arabic, but they should not be treated as anonymous substitutes. In Sudanese trade, gum from A. senegal is generally called Hashab and gum from A. seyal Talha. A buyer should connect those names to the botanical declaration, grade, test results and intended process.

The species name narrows the material, but it does not define particle size, microbiology, colour, moisture, ash, treatment or emulsifying performance. Those are separate purchasing decisions.

Why the distinction matters

The JECFA gum arabic entry recognises both Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal and assigns gum arabic INS 414 functional classes including emulsifier, stabiliser and thickener. That regulatory category does not mean every grade from either species performs identically in a particular formula.

Botanical source can matter where a manufacturer has:

  • an existing approved recipe tied to one species;
  • a customer specification or label commitment;
  • a sensory, colour or solubility target;
  • a beverage-emulsion performance requirement;
  • a validated supplier and processing route that change control must protect.

Do not switch species solely because both products are described as E414. Treat the change as a raw-material change and run the technical and quality review your system requires.

What a useful sample comparison looks like

Test like with like. Comparing raw Hashab tears with a refined spray-dried Talha powder mostly measures differences in processing and form, not just species.

For a meaningful trial, ask each supplier for:

  1. the same commercial form and intended grade;
  2. the specification and a lot-specific COA;
  3. particle-size data and test method;
  4. preparation instructions and recommended hydration conditions;
  5. retained sample identity and lot traceability;
  6. enough sample for duplicate bench work and a pilot batch.

Record hydration time, undissolved material, colour, viscosity at a stated concentration and temperature, and the application result that actually matters. For an emulsion, that might include droplet-size change, creaming or ring formation during a defined shelf-life study.

Buyer decision

Choose the material that meets the approved specification and performs in the real formulation. If species is mandatory, state it explicitly. If it is flexible, say so and define the performance and evidence that will decide approval.
