Gum Arabic Powder Specifications Explained
Read a gum arabic specification like a buyer: identity, moisture, ash, insoluble matter, particle size, microbiology and test methods.
A gum arabic specification is useful only when its limits, methods and product description match the material you intend to buy. A one-page data sheet full of numbers can still leave the most important questions unanswered.
Start with identity and scope
Before comparing results, confirm:
- botanical source and accepted alternatives;
- country of origin and processing location;
- physical form: milled, spray dried, agglomerated or another grade;
- intended market and food/technical status;
- document owner, revision number and effective date.
The title “gum arabic powder” is not enough. Mechanically milled powder and spray-dried powder can have different processing histories and specification limits.
What common parameters tell a buyer

A result without a method may be impossible to reproduce. “Viscosity: 100” has no usable meaning without units and test conditions.
Specification, typical data and COA are different
The specification defines acceptance limits. Typical data describe what production often achieves but may not be guaranteed. A certificate of analysis records results for a particular lot—or, for some entries, may report conformance rather than a new numerical test.
Ask the supplier to label these clearly. Also ask which tests are performed on every lot, which are periodic, and which are supported by a supplier declaration.
Regulatory limits are a floor, not a formulation brief
Official food-additive specifications address identity and purity. They do not define every performance property needed in a beverage, confectionery coating or encapsulation process. Your application may require tighter particle-size, colour, microbiological or emulsification controls.
Conversely, copying every value from an unrelated customer specification can create cost without reducing risk. Each limit should have a regulatory, safety, process or customer reason.
Build a comparison sheet
Normalise competing offers into one table. Record the offered value, supplier limit, your requirement, test method and evidence source. Mark blanks as unresolved—not compliant.
Before first commercial delivery, agree change notification, sample retention, COA format, out-of-specification communication and whether the approval applies to one production site.
